On 13 May, Yrupẽ arrives at CineCiutat. It's Candela Sotos's debut feature, and the director will be in the room.

This isn't your average screening: the film won the Premi Latexos at the Novos Cinemas festival in Pontevedra, an award whose entire premise is exactly this — to walk the winning film through Spain's circuit of independent cinemas. Yrupẽ is a documentary that starts with a family thread and ends up unspooling an entire history of the twentieth century. Candela Sotos digs into the archive of her great-granduncle, Guillermo Fernández-Zúñiga, a pioneer of Spanish scientific cinema, a documentary filmmaker during the Civil War, and an exile in Argentina after 1939. Among his materials, a missing film from 1954: La flor de Irupé. While the director searches for its trace through the archives, she plants a seed and films the flower as it grows. Two parallel recoveries, one of a film and one of a plant, that turn out to be the same thing: a way of bringing back into view what Francoism tried to erase.
