The year is 1974. Nineteen-year-old Ana lives in Barcelona and—in the eyes of her affluent family—is a rebellious girl. After she sneaks out one night, her father decides to place her in the hands of the *Patronato de Protección a la Mujer* (Board for the Protection of Women), an institution dedicated to “fallen women” or those “at risk of falling.” Ana is sent to Madrid and confined in a reformatory run by nuns, where she is subjected to a brutal disciplinary regime. There, she struggles to survive, finding comfort and support through her friendships with other girls in the same situation—most notably Sole, a girl from the countryside whose infectious vitality allows her to form an instant connection with Ana. This radiant friendship becomes the lifeline that keeps Ana afloat.
