There are directors capable of building worlds through, not just their films, but their language. Christopher Nolan belongs to an even stranger category: those who have managed to bring art-house cinema and mainstream cinema together. His films break the linearity of time, play with memory and identity, raise philosophical questions, and yet fill cinemas around the world. It's an almost impossible balance, and he sustains it with a consistency that very few filmmakers of his generation can boast. 

Over the coming weeks we will explore some of the films that define his universe, from the earliest glimpses of his obsession with time and memory to his most recent work.
