During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), a troupe of entertainers does its best to lift the spirits of Republican soldiers. Weary of the hardships at the front, they decide to head for Valencia. However, they mistakenly end up in Nationalist territory, where they are taken prisoner. Their only hope of survival is to put on a show for a group of military officers—a performance that clashes sharply with the entertainers' own ideology.
