The story takes place in the home of the respectable Judge Stahlbaum, who along with his wife has two adorable children: Clara and Fritz. On Christmas Eve, the judge throws a party to which the most respectable families of Nuremberg are invited; as well as Clara's eccentric godfather: Herr Drosselmeyer, who attends the meeting with his nephew, Daniel. Drosselmeyer is a manufacturer of watches and great mechanical toys. As a magician, he has the gift of amusing children, for whom he invents joyous dances and performs incredible tricks. For the Stahlbaum party, Clara's godfather brings a special gift for his goddaughter that is nothing more than a Nutcracker. At the end of the Christmas party, Clara falls asleep in an armchair in the house and from there she begins a fabulous dream.
