Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) is an ailing old man who lives in Iowa with a disabled daughter (Sissy Spacek). In addition to suffering from emphysema and vision loss, he has severe hip problems that almost prevent him from standing. When he receives the news that his brother Lyle (Stanton), with whom he has been estranged for ten years, has suffered a heart attack, despite his precarious state of health, he decides to go see him in Wisconsin .
