June 1961, New York. Legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans has found his own voice and formed the perfect trio with double bassist Scott LaFaro—his musical soulmate. A residency at the Village Vanguard culminates in the live recording—all in a single day—of two of the greatest jazz albums of all time. Days later, LaFaro dies tragically in a car accident. Paralyzed by grief, Evans stops playing for the first time since his childhood. This is the story of what happened shortly thereafter to one of the most talented and influential figures in 20th-century music.
